Robert J. Dohnert, CEO of Black Lab Software, was responsible this week for reporting on the launch of the operating system Black Lab Linux 7.6, A distribution that is based on Ubuntu. The kernel used by the new version is 3.19.0-58, the same that is present in the previous LTS version of Canonical operating system, Ubuntu 14.04 (Trusty Tahr) which is where the Long Term Support series is based. Black Lab Linux 7.x. The graphical environment it uses is Xfce, which ensures agility and customization possibilities.
Black Lab Linux 7.6 is the latest release of our stable 7.6 series operating system. Black Lab Linux 7.6 will be supported until April 2019. It can be booted on both UEFI and BIOS devices (we recommend disabling safe boot if not needed). The 32-bit version can only boot on BIOS devices.
What’s new in Black Lab Linux 7.6
Much of the reason for this release is the system maintenance to make it more reliable and stable, but they have taken the opportunity to include new software versions such as LibreOffice 5.1.2, Mozilla Firefox 45.0.2, Mozilla Thuinderbird 38.6.0, Gmusicbrowser, GNOME Documents, HexChat, GNOME Documents and HexChat, among others.
As with every release, Black Lab Linux 7.6 includes security patches and other updates, Being in this case the same that went up to the repositories of Ubuntu 14.04 on April 18. Users of version 7.x will not need to upgrade the system if they do not want to, just check that all new packages are installed.
On the other hand, developers warn that the Nvidia GeForce cards do not work well with the open-source video driver included in the Black Lab Linux kernel, so if your computer uses one of these graphics cards and you see the image freeze, you’ll need to add the boot option «Nomodeset» in the GRUB. Another option may also be not to use Black Lab Linux, of course.
Have you tried it yet? What do you think? Do you think it’s worth it?
