In the following article I will teach you in a very simple way, using the very useful terminal of our operating system, how verify the integrity of a file downloaded from the Internet, such as ISO images, checking the signature of your file md5sum.
To do this, of course, we will have to download from the same place we downloaded the file ISO, The archive md5sum.
What will we achieve with this?
With this system, we will be completely sure that the file we have downloaded, it is as its creator tells us, And has not been tampered with by third parties or misplaced by parties during the download of the same.
Many times, it happens to us that during the download of the file, some part of its content has not been downloaded well, or even we essential content is missing, in this way, by checking the checksum first, we will be completely sure that what we are about to install corresponds to what its creator tells us.
How to verify the md5sum file
To get started, we need to have the two files together in the same directories or folders.
Then we will open 1 terminal window and we will navigate to this directory, suppose we have the md5sum file and its corresponding ISO in the Downloads of our system:
To enter the Downloads folder we will type:
Then we will run the following command line:
md5sum -c filename.md5sum
Where we will replace the part filename.md5sum by the name of the file to verify.
With this the program will look for the match between the two files, and if it has been manipulated in any way, the signature will not match, showing us a warning for alert us of the modification of the checked file.
