Ubuntu has its LTS versions and in them it offers extended support for a term of up to 5 years; the latest version of Long Term Support is Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr and will have updates until 2019. That if, in one version of these we do not have the updated applications as in others, and this is one of the commitments that users make behind achieving this long-awaited stability.
That’s why we’re going to show in this post how to install Cinnamon 2.8 on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Trusty Tahr, Something that at first is not among the options offered by this distro, as we know comes with Unity as the main desktop, but fortunately this is GNU / Linux and with a little desire and dedication we can install any desktop to enjoy what we have best.
In addition, in the case of Ubuntu we have a feature that simplifies as much as possible the task of installing apps or services, and is that PPA (Personal Package Archives) are a very simple and versatile tool, which makes the installing an application in a very trivial task, as we will see on this occasion. In the case of Cinnamon we have a stable PPA, which contains builds of the Linux Mint desktop dedicated especially to Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr LTS and Ubuntu 15.10, and maintained by a user named Moorkai (who assures that the installation will be stable but warns that updates will be uploaded as far as possible, and not following a specific schedule.
What are the advantages of Cinnamon 2.8? Let’s remember some of them: it improves the sound applet and its control over line inputs and outputs, it improves the audio playback applet (with controls and information and album covers), support for Applets indicators, per multiple screen settings, For displaying information from screen and video card manufacturers and for quickly changing workspaces. In addition, the file explorer Nemo gets a new feature of mass naming of files, and has worked to improve the performance and stability of the desktop in general, where among other things you get a start and a logout much faster than before.
So let’s see, how to install Cinnamon 2.8 on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Trusty Tahr. First we will add the aforementioned PPA, which we do as follows:
We open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and enter (without the quotes, of course) «suo add-apt-repository ppa: moorkai / cinnamon».
We install Cinnamon from the PPA recently added, for this we run «sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install cinnamon».
Now we leave everything in the hands of the installation tool, which took more or less depending on our connection speed and also the power of our hardware. When this process is complete we must log out of Unity and start the Cinnamon, selecting with a click on the desktop icon provided by the Unity Greeter (to the right of the username). However, it is always best to restart the computer so that only the libraries we will use are loaded, which will result in a better performance for the use of our equipment.
Now, it may be that after a while we want to leave our team as it was before, perhaps because in the end the performance was not as expected What if we want to remove Cinnamon? It is not at all difficult, as we shall see below.
We open a terminal window again and run:
sudo apt-get purge ppa: moorkai / cinnamon.
And after that we will get a couple of instructions that specify the process for removing Cinnamon (or going back to an earlier version if we had it) and the PPA.
