The latest update of Nvidia graphics drivers has certainly been tricky for Ubuntu users. There are several ways to get hold of the latest drivers for these cards, either through the official installer that exists for Linux (which does not work properly on many occasions), through a third-party PPA repository (which given the frequency of updating its packages many of them are unstable in the system) or through the official PPA repository of GPU drivers.
Thanks to this repository it is possible to get hold of Nvidia’s proprietary and stable drivers, without having to upgrade any other library or package in our system. They are official drivers, stable and easy to apply thanks to this guide we showed you about how to install the latest Nvidia drivers on Ubuntu.
Don’t confuse the name because in this case PPA only refers to Nvidia card drivers, official and stable. You will not find other cards that are not from this company or versions that have not been properly tested. This does not mean that they can be error-free, because like all software in this type of repository, has been tested but not verified in each of the situations. If you are unable to recover your system from a failed video driver update, we do not recommend that you follow this tutorial.
The set of packages provided by this PPA is valid for versions of Ubuntu 12.04, 14.04, 15.10, 16.04 and 16.10 and takes the latest drivers used by Nvidia in its version 367.27 for Ubuntu 16.04 and 16.10, from the time it uses the just previous version for Ubuntu 12.04, 14.04 and15.10.
To install the latest drivers Nvidia on your Ubuntu system follow these simple steps:
- Agree the PPA repository to system:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa sudo apt update
- Install and activate drivers:
from the System configuration or from the Dash, en Software & Updates, Select the tab Additional Drivers and the driver you want to use, then apply the changes.
It is also possible to perform the installation from the console system by checking in advance which is the latest version of the drivers you want to download. with a apt-cache search nvidia o apt search nvidia you will be able to see available versions, and later with sudo apt install nvidia-VERSION, Install them.
