In the next tutorial I will teach them to Linux Ubuntu, In a Mackintosh Power PC G4, This will serve to take us out of the drawer of oblivion to this sensational advanced personal computer of its time.
We will install it from Ubuntu, Although it can be done with any Linux distro that has a version for these personal computers.
the Power PC G4 for Mac what i am going to utliizar is a machine with a Motorola processor PPC at 400Mhz, Has a ram memory of 1Gb divided into four slots of 256Mb each, the graphics card that comes installed as standard is one ATI Rage of 128Mb, All this with a storage medium or hard drive of only 10Gb.
to install Ubuntu in this machine that already belongs to the past, and update it to be able to give a more suitable service to its potential, we will have two different ways to Install this Linux Distro
First way, with a minimal Ubuntu cd
That’s the way more comfortable to get the version of Ubuntu that we choose from the list of available images.
We just have to download us the iso corresponding to the selected version, the largest occupies only 27Mb, i burn it on a CD using any free burner.
Once the iso is burned, we will turn it on power PC at the same time as we press the key C, And on the screen that comes out we will type “Click” and we will give “Enter”.
Immediately an assistant will come out who will ask us a few questions of the type of default language for installation, or keyboard type, It will automatically detect our hardware and will download from the network everything necessary for an optimal installation.
Needless to say, we will need to be connected to the network via Ethernet.
Second way, with an Ubuntu Live CD
Like the first way, we will have to download an iso image and burn it to a cd, The only difference is that this iso is much larger, as it occupies almost the 700MbIn addition to having all the necessary files, we will not have to have active internet connection.
The link I left you is to download the Live CD of Ubuntu 12 Apr which is the latest stable version of Ubuntu.
Once burned on a CD, we will insert the average quote in our Power PC and turn it on while holding down the Command + alt + f + o, If we do not have a Mac keyboard and what we have is a conventional keyboard, you must use the command button as a key HIGH, And as a key ALT the Windows symbol.
The screen of the Open Firmware where we will type the following line:
If this button combination does not work we would try to boot from Live CD in the same way as in step one, that is, pressing the key C at the same time that we started the system.
This step costs me a lot to get it in mine power PC, That’s why I recommend the first installation mode, which although it is much slower it works much better.
