XFCE is one of the lighter desks with which we rely on Linux, perhaps the lightest of the complete graphical environments along with LXDE and LXQT. Its use is widespread in different distributions of the Linux overview, but perhaps the one that has most helped to make known and promote its use is Xubuntu.
It’s been a while since new version of the environment, XFCE 4.12, was released today, and until the update officially arrives in the Xubuntu repositories, we will teach you how to install it on Xubuntu as quickly and easily as possible.
Maybe you find it some problems using this PPA, So keep that in mind. So far, WebUpd8 has come up with two bugs: Errors in the integration with GTK of applications that use Qt4 and failures to use the correct icon in the launcher of such applications.
The first error is fixed installing Qt4-config:
sudo apt-get install Qt4-qtconfig
Then, we launched the Qt4 configuration from the menu or from the terminal by typing
qtconfig, Ia la appearance tab we will have to choose GTK + in the style of the interface and save the changes.
As for the second problem, apparently the previous way of drawing no longer works and for now there is no way to correct.
Installing XFCE 4.12 on Xubuntu
per upgrade to XFCE 4.12 in Xubuntu 14.04 or 14.10 we will have to use the XFCE PPA for Xubuntu. To add it we must use the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xubuntu-dev/xfce-4.12 sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
After that, we log out and start again, And we should already be running XFCE 4.12. To install other additional packages such as XfDashboard, xfce4-pulseaudio-plugin or Thunar-dropbox-plugin it is necessary to go to the PPA Xubuntu Extras.
How to reverse the changes
If for some reason you want to go back to the previous version of XFCE already included in the Xubuntu repositories, you can use the PPA we gave you earlier to remove XFCE 4.12. To do this we use the following commands:
sudo apt-get install ppa-purge sudo ppa-purge ppa:xubuntu-dev/xfce-4.12
And following these steps we would already have XFCE 4.12 installed and a way to go back in case it doesn’t convince us. We hope you find it useful and helpful.
