When several forks came out of the Gnome Project programs years ago, many thought they would not last long in development and that some would even be a failure. But here they are, more alive and strong than ever, as in the case of Nemo.
Nemo is a file manager, more specifically a fork of Nautilus, which has reached version 2.6.5, which is full of new features. One of these innovations and for which it is worth trying a new connector manager that has been incorporated and that will allow us to give Nemo the features we want or need, such as opening a terminal, using dropbox, etc. …
The interesting thing about this file manager is that the Webupd8 team has managed to isolate it from the rest of Cinnamon software and we can use it in Unity and even use it as a replacement for Nautilus. The process is simple and fast.
We open a terminal and add the Webupd8 PPA:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/nemo
We are now updating the repository
sudo apt-get update
And we installed Nemo with the following commands:
sudo apt-get install nemo nemo-fileroller
After that Nemo will be installed and will work perfectly as one more application of the system, but when searching we must use “nemo” and not “files” as this corresponds to Nautilus.
How to replace it with Nautilus
We have already installed Nemo and it works perfectly, now we just need to make the relevant changes so that the system understands that it is Nemo and not Nautilus the system file manager. So we opened a terminal and:
sudo apt-get install dconf-tools
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background show-desktop-icons false
I replaced Nautilus with Nemo
xdg-mime default nemo.desktop inode/directory application/x-gnome-saved-search
We restart the system and the changes will be made. Now if we regret it, we just need to do the reverse process.
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background show-desktop-icons true
I replaced Nemo with Nautilus
xdg-mime default nautilus.desktop inode/directory application/x-gnome-saved-search
the choice is yours but of course the test is worth doing, as there are many extensions that improve remarkably on Nemo and Cinnamon does not need to be present.
