A few days ago we told you about Evolution a task manager that not only included the ability to manage our tasks but to manage our mail and calendar. A very good program but it is heavy and many only serve to see their mail. Faced with this there is a simple solution: look for a lightweight mail manager. Searching for these terms, I can only think of one program: Sylpheed.
Sylpheed is a mail manager, has a free software license, and is very light, possibly the lightest in its class. It is currently in the Ubuntu repositories although we can also download and install it by hand. In addition to having a version for GNU / Linux, Sylpheed has a version for Windows.

Installation and configuration of Sylpheed
to install Sylpheed we just have to go to the ‘ Ubuntu Software Center and search for the term Sylpheed. We select the program, as Sylpheed add-ons also appear and we will have it installed on our computer. Another form of installation is to open a terminal and type
sudo apt-get install sylpheed
A more classic and faster way than the previous one. Once we have installed the program, we run it for the first time and we will get the wizard to set up the email account
The first thing it will ask us is in which folder do we want the mail to be stored. I have personally left the default option, but you can choose the one you want. Click Next and another screen will appear
in which it asks us to insert the type of account we want to set up. They are usually of the POP3 type, although some, such as Hotmail, are of the IMAP type, in your mail options you will be informed of the type of mail you need to dial. Once we have done so, we click next and a screen will appear asking for the account details, such as the name to be used, email address, etc ….
We click next once we have done it and another screen will appear with the summary of the data entered, we click next if we like it and if we do not press Back to correct it. Finally the last screen appears in which it tells us that everything went well and that we press Finish. We now have our fully functional mail manager.
Many of you will already know a Sylpheed for being or having used lightweight distributions like Lubuntu or Xubuntu, however, it is not an exclusive application of these desktops, but can also be used in more powerful ones like Unity. Finally, you can optionally install in the Software Center the notification application that will inform you when Sylpheed has new mail, fatten the program more but still find it useful. You’ll tell me what you think of this manager, because at least it’s worth a try, don’t you think?
