Although Ubuntu is a very easy and intuitive operating system, the truth is that it has as many concepts as the most complex operating system and this sometimes drives newcomers crazy.
the Login screen it is one of those concepts that people undertake although it is the first thing we see of Ubuntu. Indeed, the Login screen is the screen on which it appears the username which we created in the installation. Once we enter the password, the Ubuntu Unity desktop will open with the installed programs by default. This login screen has several options that many are unaware of and are good to know.
The first is that the Ubuntu Login screen is a program that manages operating system sessions, this program is known as lightdm and can be changed like almost anything in Ubuntu. There are other session managers like GDM, KDM, XDM or Slim.
If we decide to use Lightdm, we need to know the parts that make up the Login screen. The user is a very important part, as is the password, but also, below we find a guest session, A session without a password that allows us to access the desktop but with reduced permissions. If you look closely, it appears on each user’s side the Ubuntu logo. If we press it, all the desktops and graphical environments that we have installed in Ubuntu will appear, from which we can choose one to work during this session or by default.
Lightdm is the default session manager or Login screen in Ubuntu
If we go to the top left we will find several icons that will be kept during the session, one of them is the shutdown button, typical and easy to recognize. The other widget is the calendar and date, which we can simply modify or view. And finally there is the speaker that will allow us to vary the volume of the sound. We will also have two more widgets, a keyboard and a doll, the keyboard shows us a virtual keyboard useful for when the keyboard does not work or we can just use the mouse. The doll will activate other accessibility options, such as lowering the resolution to see larger icons and letters.
The Wallpaper or wallpaper is usually what we have on our desktop, but we can change and modify this thanks to customization tools such as Unity Tweak Tool. Change is easy and can make our operating system more personal if any.
Finally say that the login screen can be avoided by indicating in «System settings»That the session starts directly (which is not recommended) but we will never be able to remove the session manager programThat is, we can not uninstall lightdm but install another session manager, something important to remember.
You may already know when someone talks about Lightdm or xdm or directly when they say “enter password on login screen«. It’s easy and simple.
